SCAN Health Plan is rolling out a new program that aims to train brokers to serve as better navigators in the member care journey.
Through the Brokers as Health Navigators initiative, the insurer will offer training and tools to brokers that equip them to act as trusted advisors who support members in their health. SCAN said that while seniors are adaptable to technology, they often seek human guidance, particularly if they have chronic health needs.
Participating brokers will be able to support members in completing certain health activities focused around quality and outcomes. In the first wave of the program, brokers will be able to work with members to ensure they complete their welcome call when they sign up, which helps ensure they understand their benefits.
They'll also be able to educate members about the importance of flu vaccinations and assist in scheduling shots, as well as work with them on scheduling annual wellness visits.
When encounter and welcome call data confirm these activities are completed, brokers will be eligible for compensation, SCAN said.
“[Medicare Advantage (MA)] is here to stay, but it must continue to prove its value—not just financially, but clinically and experientially,” said Sachin Jain, M.D., CEO of SCAN Group and SCAN Health Plan, in the press release. “Many of the best brokers are already acting as trusted advisors, guiding members well beyond enrollment."
"This program builds on that foundation and enables more brokers to help members access care and complete preventive services," Jain said.
The insurer said the initiative is part of the company's broader push to highlight for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services that brokers can demonstrate "measurable value" in the MA program.
Michael Blea, chief growth officer at SCAN Health Plan, said in the announcement that the program was designed based on feedback from brokers, who said they want to build deeper relationships with clients and work to generate greater value.
"This program creates a clear pathway for brokers to differentiate themselves, strengthen retention and assist members with completing important health-related activities," Blea said.
